Third molars – Wisdom teeth

The third molar usually appears between the ages of 16 and 24 years. Wisdom teeth are removed to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future. Wisdom teeth are extracted for two general reasons: When they affect other teeth or due to impaction. Potential problems caused by the presence of impacted wisdom teeth, include infections caused by food particles easily trapped in the jaw area behind the wisdom teeth.

Removal of wisdom teeth takes place under local anesthesia. If desired, we can prescribe a sedative tablet. Surgery generally lasts no longer than 10-20 minutes, but some time will be spend on preparation of the procedure and postsurgical information.

Postoperative pain, soreness and swelling after treatment is usually light to moderate. You have to stay calm the day of surgery. See also under patient info.
